Manipur opposition urges third party intervention to end violence

IMPHAL: Former Manipur chief minister and opposition leader O Ibobi Singh suggested the Manipur government to seek the intervention of the central government as a neutral mediator to initiate dialogue and resolve the ongoing ten-month-long violence in the Northeast state.

Ibobi suggested an immediate announcement to cease firing from both sides and to disarm them, accompanied by a warning of stern action against violators.

This, he believes, would halt the violence and pave the way for dialogue.

He presented these recommendations during a brief discussion on the final day of the fifth session of the 12^th Manipur legislative assembly, emphasizing the toll the violence has taken on lives and property since its outbreak on May 3 last year.

In response to Ibobi's suggestions, Manipur chief minister Biren Singh mentioned that dialogue initiatives are already underway.

He highlighted two meetings held with MLAs and announced plans for a third meeting involving the chairmen of the hill area committee.

However, regarding disarmament, CM Biren Singh cited complexities, with one side resorting to arms due to grievances while the other side consists of SoO militants.

The Manipur CM also disclosed his discussions with union home minister Amit Shah during a visit to Delhi, where he assured that all necessary steps are being taken to restore normalcy in Manipur.
