Guwahati: Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey stated that all steps are being taken to ensure the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

A statement from the Raj Bhavan read that Governor Anusuiya Uikey conveyed to a delegation from the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and the United Naga Council (UNC) that she has discussed the matter with President Droupadi Murmu, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Home Minister Amit Shah.

"The Governor assured the representatives that necessary measures will be taken to implement the NRC in the state, stating that it is only a matter of time. She mentioned that the issue has been discussed with the President of India, the Finance Minister, and the Union Home Minister, and that the Centre is aware of the situation in Manipur," the statement read.

The statement further noted that representatives from COCOMI and UNC submitted a memorandum to Governor Uikey, advocating for the swift implementation of the NRC in Manipur, using 1951 as the base year.

This push follows a resolution adopted by the Manipur Assembly in February, which urged the Centre to implement the NRC to identify "foreigners" in the state.

However, the decision to implement the NRC has faced opposition from Kuki groups, who have protested against it.

Ethnic violence has plagued Manipur for over a year, with the BJP government in the state facing criticism for its inability to control the situation.
