Manipur: Myanmar detainees fear deportation, continue hunger strike at Imphal jail

Imphal: A group of Myanmar nationals lodged at Manipur Central Jail in Imphal has been on a prolonged hunger strike for over ten days, demanding immediate release and protection from deportation back to Myanmar.

According to the Burma Refugees Committee - Kabaw Valley, the detainees, who have completed their jail terms and paid fines, fear being handed over to the Myanmar junta against their will.

The group has accused the jail authorities of using excessive force to suppress the strike, including firing sound bombs, rubber bullets, and even guns.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the committee urged the Indian government and Manipur Governments to take immediate action to protect the lives and well-being of the detainees.

The group called for an end to the violent repression and a halt to plans to deport the detainees to Myanmar.

The committee has also expressed concern about the potential for the detainees to be handed over to the Myanmar junta, which could "endanger their lives".

They have requested that the detainees be allowed to stay temporarily along the border areas after their release until they can safely return to their homes.

There are currently 141 Myanmar nationals detained at the Manipur jail in Imphal, including 97 males and 44 females. Many of them have already completed their sentences but remain incarcerated.
