Imphal: Unidentified militants launched an attack on the residence of a Manipur government official early Thursday morning.

A powerful grenade was lobbed into the home of Chief Engineer Renmei Alenmei, 59, located in the Lamphel police station area in Imphal.

Fortunately, the grenade failed to explode. The Manipur police's bomb disposal squad was immediately dispatched to the scene and safely removed the explosive device.

Police suspect that the attack may be motivated by extortion demands. A case has been registered at the Lamphel police station, and no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Local residents reported seeing two individuals on motorcycles fleeing the scene after the attack.

A local women's organization has condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly act and urging the perpetrators to refrain from targeting crowded areas in the future.
