Manipur: Medical services at JNIMS disrupted as doctors go on strike

IMPHAL: Patients encountered significant challenges as doctors and medical students from the state government-operated Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Manipur commenced a two-day strike on Wednesday (March 06).

The protest, held at the office gate of the JNIMS Superintendent in Imphal East district of Manipur, aimed to denounce the harassment faced by the medical fraternity.

A banner prominently displayed at the protest site conveyed the message: “Sit-in protest against the harassment of the medical fraternity.”

On the second day of the strike, scheduled for Thursday (March 07), disruptions are expected in the Outpatient Department (OPD), Gynecologist sections, and Operation theatres.

Placards bearing messages such as “Stop false allegations”, “Stop harassment, save the workplace environment”, “Stop extortion”, and “Stop violence against the medical fraternity” adorned the protest area.

Speaking on the side-lines of the demonstration, senior doctor Matouleibi clarified that the protest was not directed against any specific community or individual.

Rather, it aimed to address a concerning situation where doctors and staff are unfairly held accountable in cases of mishaps or patient deaths.

Dr Matouleibi urged the public in Manipur to stand in solidarity with the medical professionals, enabling them to carry out their duties effectively and fearlessly in the future.
