Guwahati: Security forces on Thursday averted a major disaster by taking swift and timely action and recovering a large quantity of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from Imphal East district of Manipur.

Kohima-based Defence PRO Lt Col Amit Shukla said that acting on a tip-off, columns of the Indian Army and Manipur Police acted swiftly and launched an extensive search operation.

The Indian Army also incorporated Army explosives detection dog squad, he added.

The extensive search operation led to the recovery of as many as seven IEDs - weighing approximately 28.5 kilograms - from the Bongjang and Itham villages of Imphal East district, he said.

The IEDs were soon diffused by experts from the Army Engineers, he added.

Lt Col Shukla further said that the large quantity of explosives had a potential threat to life and property, and the recovery prevented a major disaster, thus saving many precious lives.
