Guwahati: The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police has apprehended the alleged self-styled finance secretary of Manipur’s extremist outfit United Kuki National Army (UKNA) from Guwahati’s Beltola area.

Based on a tip-off, a team of STF carried out an operation in the city’s Beltola area under the jurisdiction of Basistha police station on Friday (September 13, 2024) evening, Assam Police CPRO, Pranabjyoti Goswami, said in a press statement late Saturday evening.

During the operation, the STF team apprehended the 34-year-old militant leader - LS Yosef Chongloi – who is suspected to be involved in various acts of sabotage in Manipur and the bordering areas of Assam, it added.

Chongloi - hailing from Manipur’s Churachandpur district - is suspected to be involved in the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that destroyed the RCC Bridge near Saparmeina in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district along the National Highway-2 connecting the state’s capital Imphal with Nagaland’s Dimapur in April this year, it said.

He is also suspected to be involved in the armed attack at an Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) convoy in Manipur’s Tamenglong district earlier this year, it added.

Chongloi has been arrested in connection with the STF police station case 15/2024 under sections 147 (wage war against the Indian government)/148 (conspiracy)/149 (collecting arms with intention of waging war against the Indian government)/150 (concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) read with section 16/17/18/20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, it further said.

Further investigation into the matter is on.
