Manipur Independence Day marred by violence, strike
Imphal: Manipur’s 78th Independence Day celebrations were overshadowed by a general strike called by militant groups, as the state continues to grapple with ethnic violence.
Despite the tense atmosphere, the state-level celebrations proceeded with Chief Minister N Biren Singh hoisting the national flag at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground.
In his address, Singh outlined government initiatives to aid the thousands displaced by the May 3rd conflict, including the distribution of Rs. 300 crores in benefits to 4 lakh beneficiaries across 46 schemes.
He also announced eight new programs to support the affected population and promote economic growth.
Blaming "powermonger politicians" for instigating the violence, the Chief Minister reiterated the government's commitment to restoring peace and harmony in the state.
However, the day was marked by a shutdown enforced by eight militant outfits. Shops, businesses, and schools remained closed, and vehicular movement was minimal.
Security forces maintained a high alert across the state, with exemptions granted for essential services such as healthcare and media.
