Manipur govt on high alert as Kuki outfits plan state-wide rallies

Imphal: The Manipur government has issued a stern warning to Kuki outfits planning rallies across the state on Saturday (August 31, 2024).

In a bid to prevent further escalation of tensions, the government has ordered strict security measures and a robust response mechanism to maintain law and order.

The Kuki outfits, demanding the creation of a Union Territory with a Legislature for the Kuki-Zo community, have planned rallies in various districts of Manipur, with the main event scheduled at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.

In a notification, the Manipur Home Commissioner, N. Ashok Kumar, expressed deep concern over the potential for these rallies to disrupt the fragile peace in the state.

He urged the public to refrain from participating in or inciting any activities that could lead to law and order issues.

The government has directed all government offices, educational institutions, and private businesses to remain open and function normally during the rally period.

Security forces have been deployed to sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.

The call to organise protest rallies in Kuki-Zo areas was issued by the Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) and the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO).

The rally is being organised to protest a purported viral audio tape of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh that has caused widespread outrage among the Kuki-Zo community.

Meanwhile, powerful Naga organizations, including the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) and Senapati District Students Association, have opposed the Kuki-Zo rallies within their jurisdictions.

They have issued public notices prohibiting any form of agitation or gathering in their areas.

The planned rallies come amid ongoing tensions between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur, which have resulted in violent clashes and displacement of thousands of people.

The government's decision to maintain a high alert reflects the gravity of the situation and the need to prevent further violence.
