Manipur: Five-year-old child buried alive, two rescued in landslide

Imphal: A five-year-old school student was buried alive and two of his friends sustained injuries in a landslide caused by the extensive slope cut for the expansion and construction works at Rengpang/Khongsang village under the Noney district on the National Highway 37 connecting Imphal to Silchar, via Jiribam district headquarters of the state.

The movement of vehicles passing on this NH 37 has been blocked temporarily owing to the incident, official sources said.

The National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) are presently undertaking the road construction project on NH 37.

The incident happened when three students studying in nursery class were returning to their homes after attending classes from GRMS school, Rengpang/Khongsang in Manipur’s Noneh district at around 1:30 pm on Saturday.

Ringunguwang Panmei, 5, a resident of Rengpang/Khongsang village and son of Damuilui Panmei died on the spot in the landslide.

His two schoolmates Thaijiliuw Kamei, 9, and Rinkhunlung Kamei, 7, both from the same village were rescued and survived the landslide, officials said.

All of them were rushed to the Noney Primary Health Centre where the doctors attending them declared, that Ringunguwang Panmei was brought dead, the official sources added.
