Imphal: Following a steering down strike launched by drivers plying their vehicles between Silchar in Assam and Imphal in Manipur, over 100 goods-laden trucks and liquefied petroleum gas tankers are stranded at Jiribam.

The agitation started on Monday under the aegis of the All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers’ Union (AJRTDU) and will continue till July 24.

This was stated by the president of the AJRTDU, Sadananda Meitei while talking to the newsmen on Monday.

Sadananda said that the road condition of the NH-37 connecting Imphal to Jiribam district headquarters has turned from bad to worse during this rainy season despite the Road Transport and Highways being responsible for construction, periodic repairing and maintenance of this road, the lifeline of the mendicant Manipur state.

In this regard, the AJRTDU urged the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to complete the road repair works by July 24.

The president also stated that the Government of Manipur ought to supervise construction and maintenance as Manipur is the beneficiary State of NH-37.

Because of the dilapidated road condition, the plying of vehicles on the distance of around 222 km from Imphal to Jiribam takes around four to five days, the president added.
