Manipur celebrates Mera-Hou-Chongba for unity and peace

Imphal: Manipur celebrated the annual Mera-Hou-Chongba festival on Thursday, a cultural event that epitomizes the state's commitment to unity and harmony among its diverse communities.

This significant occasion fosters stronger bonds between the valley and hill tribes of Manipur, promoting peaceful coexistence and understanding.

The festival, which falls on the 15th lunar day of the Mera (October/November) month according to the Meitei calendar, was marked by a series of traditional rituals and celebrations.

Led by Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba, the titular king of Manipur and a Rajya Sabha member, a religious procession commenced from the royal palace in Imphal and culminated at the historic Kangla fort.

A highlight of the festival was the lighting of the Mera Thaumei, a tall green bamboo pole adorned with a lamp.

This symbolic act represents the festival's significance and the hope for a harmonious future. The titular king offered prayers and floral tributes at the Kangla fort, seeking blessings for peace and prosperity for all communities.

To reinforce the spirit of unity, the festival included gift exchanges between valley and hill people. Traditional clothes, seasonal vegetables, and fruits were exchanged, symbolizing the deep-rooted bond that unites the diverse ethnic groups of Manipur.

Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba emphasized the festival's importance in strengthening the ties between communities and fostering a sense of belonging.

He highlighted Mera-Hou-Chongba as a unique event that celebrates the state's rich cultural heritage and promotes peaceful coexistence.
