Manipur: Car falls into Loktak Lake, two dead

Imphal: Two persons drowned while two escaped from the waterly grave at Loktak Lake in Manipur after a car they were travelling in fell into the water body on Thursday night.

The incident occurred near the Boat House at Sendra, a part of the Loktak Lake under the Moirang police station in the Bishnupur district of Manipur around 9 pm on Thursday. 

Four friends were driving towards Sendra after returning from a meeting at Nambol bazaar when the driver lost control of the car while trying to make an abrupt turn.

The vehicle veered off the road at the U-turn and fell into the Loktak.

Two of the occupants including the driver Akoijam Premchand were trapped inside and drowned, while the other two managed to escape by breaking the car window.

The deceased have been identified as Akoijam Premchand (26) and Irengbam Bisheshwor (22), both residents of Tronglaobi in the same district.

Locals rushed the survivors, Kongjengbam Bipin Singh (26) and Hemam Haridas (24), to the nearby hospital after noticing them.

Meanwhile, a police team from the Moirang police station have begun an investigation.

A police officer said, “We have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 279 (endangering human life by negligent driving) and are further investigating the case.”
