Manipur bans hunting, trade of Amur Falcons
Imphal: The Manipur government has imposed a comprehensive prohibition on the pursuit, capture, slaughter and trade of Amur falcons in the state’s Tamenglong district and its surrounding areas with immediate effect.
Tamenglong Deputy Commissioner L Angshim Dangshawa issued a notice under the Wildlife Protection Act of India, 1972 to this effect on Wednesday.
All gun holders have been asked to deposit their weapons to the village authorities by September 30, 2024.
The DC in the notice directed the 44 village authorities of two districts - Tamenglong and Noney- to submit a report on collection of guns by the end of September.
The village authorities will retain the air guns until the end of November or till the falcons have completed their migration.

The authorities have issued strict orders saying any individual caught violating the orders will face legal action.
The Amur falcons, locally known as ‘Akhoipuina’ or ‘Kahoipuina,' lands in Manipur, mostly in the Tamenglong district and neighbouring Nagaland in mid-October, from their breeding grounds in South Eastern Siberia and Northern China.
After roosting for about a month in the state, the raptors fly towards the Southern and Eastern parts of Africa and flock for a short time before moving towards their breeding grounds.
