Imphal: The 13-day Manipur assembly session commenced on Wednesday (July 31), with expectations of intense debates from the opposition Congress concerning the recent violence in Jiribam district of Manipur.

The Manipur assembly session is scheduled to run until August 12.

According to reports, Congress intends to bring up the recent violent incidents in Jiribam and other issues that have affected Manipur over the past several months.

Violence in Jiribam district of Manipur erupted following recovery of the body of 59-year-old farmer Soibam Saratkumar Singh on June 06.

This incident sparked a wave of violence in Jiribam, leading 900 tribals from the Kuki and Hmar communities to seek refuge in Cachar district of Assam.

Moreover, the ten tribal MLAs from the Kuki-Zo community have previously boycotted sessions, demanding a separate administration or Union Territory for tribals in Manipur.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh recently expressed his intention to request these MLAs to attend the current session.

However, Paolienlal Haokip, a BJP MLA from the Saikot assembly constituency in the tribal-dominated Churachandpur district, confirmed their boycott.

“When my people can’t set foot in Imphal, how can I attend an Assembly held in the state capital,” Haokip stated.
