Imphal: The central government has announced the construction of 7,000 houses under the special financial package/project of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Manipur.

In a letter, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Ministry informed the Manipur Chief Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi that all together, 7000 houses would be constructed in violence-hit Manipur under the special PMAY scheme.

The financial package is to be made for Manipur facing hardships due to the ongoing ethnic violence between the non-tribals and tribals in the state.

For this, Manipur Chief Secretary Dr Joshi is now in the national capital and taking directives from the officials of the RD&PR.

Official reports stated that relevant documents belonging to the families affected in the violence are to be submitted by the state government to the concerned central government authorities within 15 days.

The PMAY is a credit-linked subsidy scheme by the Government of India to facilitate access to affordable housing for the low and moderate-income residents of the country.

As many as 11,133 houses have been set on fire, out of which 4,569 homes have been destroyed in the ongoing ethnic violence between the non-tribal Meiteis and tribal Kuki-Zo that broke out in the state on May 3, 2023.

The violence broke out after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

So far, over 230 people have been killed in the strife.

A total of 11,892 cases have been registered in different police stations in connection with the ethnic violence. Around 6,000 weapons have been looted from the state armories of which around half of its looted weapons were recovered in various operations in the state.

The state government has established 302 relief camps to provide shelter to 59,414 internally displaced persons.
