Guwahati: As many as 16 weapons looted by a mob from a police station in Ukhrul district of Manipur on October 2, 2024 have been recovered.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Manipur Inspector General of Police (Operations) IK Muivah said a mob stormed the Ukhrul police station on October 2 and made away with a total of 20 weapons during a clash between two groups.

He said with the cooperation of security forces, community leaders and the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), 80 per cent of the looted weapons have been recovered and efforts are in progress to recover the remaining ones.

IGP Muivah said the recovered weapons include AK-47 rifles, INSAS rifles and 9mm pistols.

He said the situation in Ukhrul is under control with security forces, including the Manipur Rifles, Assam Rifles and the Border Security Force (BSF) keeping a tight vigil with cooperation of leaders of both the groups.

The senior police officer lauded the efforts of all who helped in bringing back normalcy in the region.

He appealed to both the groups to exercise restraint and let the situation deescalate.

The gunfight on October 2 left four people dead, including a Manipur Rifles personnel, besides 20 others sustaining gunshot injuries.

The incident took place during the annual cleanliness drive when an altercation between two groups escalated into gunfire, resulting in the fatalities and injuries.

The administration soon imposed prohibitory orders and suspended mobile data services in the Ukhrul town.
