Lok Sabha polls: BJP's Dilip Saikia battles anti-incumbency in Darrang-Udalguri triangular contest

Udalguri:  As the second phase of Lok Sabha elections approaches, the political landscape in the newly formed Darrang-Udalguri constituency in Assam is characterized by a spirited triangular contest.

Incumbent MP Dilip Saikia, representing the BJP, finds himself navigating the currents of anti-incumbency, while facing formidable opponents in Durga Das Boro of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Madhab Rajbongshi of the Congress.

Despite the challenges posed by the anti-incumbency sentiment, the BJP's top leadership in the state, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and Assam BJP Minority Morcha President Santiuse Kujur, and BTC Executive Member Diganta Baruah, are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to secure a resounding victory for Dilip Saikia.

Santiuse Kujur, in particular, enjoys widespread support among the tea garden populace and religious minority communities, expressing confidence that Saikia, backed by the UPPL and AGP, will emerge victorious with a significant margin.

Kujur highlighted the pro-people initiatives spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, which have garnered support from diverse communities and propelled the BJP's agenda of welfare and development.

He dismissed the opposition parties as lacking in strength and regional support, emphasizing that the "Adivasi" and "Religious Minorities" communities are aligned with the BJP's vision for the state's progress and will not succumb to divisive agendas.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders and party workers are actively engaging with voters through door-to-door canvassing and mass meetings across the 11 Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) encompassing the Udalguri-Darrang constituency.

Following delimitation, the constituency now comprises 11 LACs, namely Rangia, Kamalpur, Tamulpur, Goreswar, Udalguri, Bhergaon, Tangla, Mazbat, Sipajhar, Mangaldai, and Dalgaon, spanning four districts.

The constituency has a total of 2,187,160 eligible voters, comprising 1,099,294 males and 1,087,847 females.
