Guwahati: A state from the northeast came out on the top among all the 21 states that went to vote for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on Friday. At 80.40 per cent, Tripura clocked the highest voter turnout among all the states that went to polls on Friday.

Voting took place at 1,686 polling centres in the West Tripura Parliamentary constituency which went to polls on Friday.

According to reports, more than 23,000 voters were still seen standing in queues after the polling hours in the state.

Speaking to reporters on Friday evening, West Tripura Parliamentary constituency Returning Officer Vishal Kumar said, “As much as 80.40 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 5 PM. This figure is likely to increase by two to three per cent since there were 23 thousand voters or so in front of 332 polling centres after the end of the polling hours.”

A total of 102 Lok Sabha constituencies in 21 states went for voting on Friday.

Apart from a few incidents of violence mostly the polls went on smoothly with an aggregate of 62 per cent voter turnout happening in all 21 states.
