NAGAON: The police in Morigaon district of Assam finds itself embroiled in controversy as allegations emerge of ‘illegal’ detention of a Congress leader.

Krishnadas, the chairperson of Assam Congress’s scheduled caste (SC) department, was allegedly picked up by the police on the eve of second phase of Lok Sabha election.

These allegations were raised by senior Assam Congress leader and party’s candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency – Pradyut Bordoloi – on Friday (April 26).

The incident, which allegedly occurred at the stroke of midnight on Thursday (April 25), has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Assam.

Krishnadas, a prominent figure within the Congress party, was allegedly picked up by the police in Morigaon district of Assam and detained at the Jagiroad police station.

The Congress party in Assam has been vocal in condemning the alleged targeting of its cadres by the police, labelling it as an attempt to disrupt the electoral process and undermine democratic principles.

“The Morigaon police is at it again! Continuing to terrorise Congress cadres on the eve of Lok Sabha election 2024,” said Pradyut Bordoloi.

He added: “The state SC department chairperson (of Assam Congress) Krishna Das has been illegally picked up at the stroke of midnight and detained in the Jagiroad thana.”
