Guwahati: India addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council, expressing deep concern about the deteriorating situation in neighbouring Myanmar.

Kshitij Tyagi, a representative from India's Permanent Mission, stated that the "precarious humanitarian situation and escalation of violence" in Myanmar has resulted in a significant influx of refugees into India's northeastern states.

This influx has placed additional burdens on the region.

India emphasized its long-standing commitment to peace and stability in Myanmar, as well as its support for the country's transition towards a democratic system.

However, the statement also acknowledged the negative consequences of the ongoing crisis, including a rise in transnational crimes like drug and human trafficking.

To address these concerns, India is currently in the process of fencing its border with Myanmar and terminating the existing free movement agreement, a report said.
