IMD issues heavy rains alert for Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam continues to worsen with no signs of improvement as continuous downpours affect parts of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, leading to the loss of lives due to floods, landslides, and other related causes.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rains in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh on Friday (July 05), with an orange alert extending until July 10.

In Meghalaya, the IMD has issued a red alert for the East Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills districts for July 05.

An orange alert has been issued for East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills, with the orange alert continuing until July 09 for East Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills districts of Meghalaya.

In Assam, heavy rain (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hours), along with isolated extremely heavy rain (21 cm or more in 24 hours), is expected over Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa districts on Friday (July 05).

However, district-wise weather forecasts for Arunachal Pradesh were not available at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, the flood condition in Assam remains stable, with no further rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River in the Kamrup, Goalpara and Dhubri districts of lower Assam, according to the latest data provided by the Central Water Commission.
