IIT-Guwahati 26th convocation: 2145 degrees to be awarded on July 14

Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is holding its 26th convocation on Sunday, July 14, where it will award as many as 2,145 degrees to its graduating class.

The degrees to be awarded this year includes 932 in undergraduate programmes, 938 in postgraduate programmes and 275 in PhD programmes. The total number of female students graduating this year is 468.

The first batches from multiple programmes, including MBA, MA in liberal arts, MDes in electronic product design, MTech in bioengineering, MTech in biomedical science and engineering, MS(R) in polymer science and technology, and first PhD student in the Joint PhD programme in food science and technology with Gifu University will also be awarded degrees this year.

From its first convocation in 1999, a total of 63 students graduated, and the premier institute has reached remarkable milestones. Over the past 25 years, more than 22,600 students have been conferred degrees at IIT Guwahati.

A total of four gold medals, including the President’s gold medal, the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma gold medal and the Governor of Assam gold medals for both undergraduate and postgraduate categories will be conferred during the convocation.

Additionally, 16 silver medals will be awarded to the top performers in each discipline of BTech, BDes, MA, MSc and MBA programmes. There will also be 14 best PhD thesis awards and 14 best master's thesis awards, recognising outstanding research across all disciplines.

Speaking about the convocation, Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof Devendra Jalihal, said, “This milestone reflects the institute’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence and cutting-edge research. We take immense pride in our graduates, who continually showcase their dedication to progressing science and technology.”

“As we honour the accomplishments of the class of 2024, we eagerly anticipate their future contributions to society and the global scientific community,” Prof Jalihal added.

Padma Shri awardee Dr Sridhar Vembu, Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation will be present as the Chief Guest at the event.
