HSPDP urges Meghalaya govt to resume border talks with Assam

Guwahati: The Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) has appealed to the Meghalaya government to initiate the second phase of border negotiations with Assam.

The HSPDP also said that the six unresolved sectors of the interstate boundary dispute should be kept in focus.

In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, HSPDP President KP Pangniang acknowledged the government's progress in settling six sectors in 2022 but emphasized the need to address the remaining areas of contention.

The party expressed appreciation for the government's commitment to resolving the dispute and urged an immediate resumption of talks.

Chief Minister Sangma has assured that discussions with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will take place before the upcoming autumn session of the state Assembly. Regional committees have been established in both states to facilitate the talks, and necessary documentation will soon be submitted to Assam.

Minister Paul Lyngdoh reiterated the state's strong claim over 54 villages in the Langpih sector, which is being managed by the West Khasi Hills regional committee.
