Namita Thapar, the executive director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals and popular judge of business reality show Shark Tank India, gave suggestions on how to combat post partum depression on the occasion of National Safe Motherhood Day which falls on April 11.

National Safe Motherhood Day is observed annually to promote awareness about maternal health, reduce maternal mortality rates, and ensure access to quality healthcare during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care

One of the most common causes new mothers often face right after giving birth is postpartum depression.

It can last up to two weeks and ladies who have just entered the motherhood phase face constant sadness, anxiety and tiredness which are the symptoms of post partum depression

Namita Thapar, in a video on Instagram, revealed that 20% of Indian women go through post partum depression

She revealed that women going through post partum depression suffer from hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, physical exhaustion.

Post partum depression can happen due to genetic conditions or due to some prior history.

Thapar says that it is ‘NORMAL’ to go through post partum depression and remind new mothers to not give themselves more guilt.

She suggested that women suffering from post partum depression should go and meet a doctor, meet a counselor, meet and talk to other women who have gone through it.

Thapar also said that talking with friends and family members also help women going through this difficult phase in their motherhood journey.

She revealed that it is important to ‘de-stigmatize’ post partum depression and remind mothers going through it that ‘they are not alone’ and help can be sought for it.
