Guwahati: In a matter of grave concern for the healthcare functioning in the state-run medical colleges, 16 doctors of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have tendered their resignation recently.

It has also been learnt that 13 doctors have resigned from their position in Jorhat Medical College & Hospital (JMCH) and 11 doctors are reported to have resigned from Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh.

The list of resignations of doctors also includes from state-run hospitals in Silchar, Nalbari, Kokrajhar and Diphu Medical Colleges.

According to reports, many resignations of these doctors are still not accepted by the administration.

Sources say that one resignation each has been accepted in GMCH and AMCH.

In Assam, 174 doctors have quit government jobs in the last five years.

According to insiders, the resignations are primarily due to low salaries and poor healthcare facilities combined with work pressure in state-run government hospitals.

Moreover, stringent guidelines of the government for doctors are also a deterrent for them.
