Phukan had been undergoing treatment for various ailments for two months, following directions from the Assam Chief Minister. His health deteriorated after suffering two strokes on Friday evening.

Phukan's health issues began with a fall at his home, resulting in a head injury.

He was initially admitted to Hayat Hospital and later transferred to GMCH.

He had also tested positive for COVID-19 during the pandemic and recently contracted a chest infection.

As the founder of Bismoi, Phukan played a pivotal role in promoting Assamese literature and entertainment.

The magazine, first published in 1968, featured works by esteemed writers like Baidurjya Baruah and Ranju Hazarika.

However, the publication ceased two years ago following the demise of Phukan's wife.
