Assam: India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper to run on Guwahati–Kolkata route
Guwahati: India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train will run between Assam's Guwahati and Kolkata, improving overnight travel in eastern and northeastern India.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the service will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon, after completing all tests and certifications.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the approval on X on January 1, thanking the Prime Minister for launching the service and Vaishnaw for supporting Assam’s railway development.
Vaishnaw stated that the Guwahati–Kolkata route has been selected for the sleeper variant. “Testing and certification are complete, and Prime Minister Modi will flag off the inaugural service shortly,” he said, highlighting that the train will offer long-distance overnight travel with advanced safety, modern facilities, and a high-quality experience.
The train recently completed high-speed trials on the Kota to Nagda section, reaching 180 kmph. It will have 16 coaches, including 11 three-tier AC, four two-tier AC, and one first AC, and will accommodate 823 passengers.
Fares are set at around Rs 2,300 for 3AC, Rs 3,000 for 2AC, and Rs 3,600 for first AC, with meals included.
The service is expected to benefit business travellers, families, students, and tourists seeking a fast, dependable overnight connection.
The sleeper train features upgraded berths with better cushioning, automatic doors, improved suspension and noise reduction, and modern interiors with enhanced lighting.
The train has safety features like the Kavach anti-collision system, emergency communication, advanced driver controls, and disinfectant-based sanitation.
Its streamlined design and automatic exterior doors are expected to make overnight travel safer and more comfortable.
