Following the introduction of new criminal laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the conviction rate in Guwahati has jumped to 86.84 percent, reflecting faster trials and more efficient investigation processes.

“In 2021, our charge-sheet filing rate was 19.13 percent. This year, we have improved it by over 50 percent. After the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the conviction rate reached 86.84 percent,” said Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain during a press briefing at the Commissioner of Police office.

Regarding property crimes, Jain reported 1,854 cases in 2025, down from 2,804 in 2024 and 3,752 in 2023. Vehicle thefts also declined significantly, dropping from 1,118 cases in 2024 to 553 in 2025, with 267 vehicles recovered, giving a recovery rate of 48.2 percent.

In mobile theft cases, 1,159 stolen phones were recovered and returned to their owners, while 203 arrests were made. Additionally, 123 snatching incidents led to the apprehension of 163 individuals.

Drug-related crimes under the NDPS Act also saw a rise, with 406 cases registered in 2025, up from 365 in 2024 and 301 in 2023. A total of 555 people, including traffickers and small-scale peddlers, were arrested during the year.

Jain noted that the increase in cases and arrests reflects the police’s intensified action against drug networks.

In cybercrime, the Panbazar Cyber Crime Police Station seized Rs 6.28 crore in 2023 and returned the money to victims. In 2025, 1,784 investigations were conducted and 18 cases prosecuted. Awareness programs on cybercrime continue to be organised regularly.

On road safety, Guwahati recorded 1,026 accidents in 2025, down from 1,218 in 2024. Jain thanked the public for their cooperation, noting that no major traffic accidents occurred on December 31.

The police also collected Rs 50 crore in fines for traffic violations, reflecting stricter enforcement.

The Guwahati Police reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and welfare while continuing efforts to improve law enforcement outcomes across the city.
