Assam: Guwahati Police nab alleged car lifting gang from Barpeta

Guwahati: At least four men suspected to be a part of a car lifter gang were arrested by the police in Guwahati, Assam on Saturday.

Police sources said that the accused were arrested based on a complaint regarding a stolen pickup truck.

On May 3, the police received a complaint that the pickup truck (a Mahindra Bolero Pikup) bearing registration number AS01FC9378 was stolen from the Lalmati area near the highway in Guwahati.

Based on the complaint, a team from the Basistha Police Station launched an operation and accordingly, three men were traced in Barpeta.

On investigating further, the police found the involvement of the three and arrested them from various locations in Barpeta, Assam with the help of local police.

The accused were identified as Sona Miya (21), Taher Ali (35), and Mahar Ali (35).

On further questing them, the police traced the person who had "bought" the stolen vehicle in Rangia, Kamrup.

The accused was identified as Nurul Islam (38), a resident of Rangia itself and the vehicle was later traced at Dwarkuchi village in Tamulpur, Assam.

Further, the number plate (registration plate) of the vehicle was also found to have been changed by the accused.

The police said that all legal proceedings were completed and further investigations were being carried out.

The group is suspected to be behind several other vehicle listings in the region.
