Assam DGP orders suspension of police personnel for assault on civilians
Guwahati: Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has ordered the suspension of police officers involved in recent incidents of violence against civilians.
The announcement came following allegations of assault in Guwahati and Tinsukia districts.
In a statement, the DGP directed the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, and the Superintendent of Police, Tinsukia, to suspend officers implicated in the scuffles and assaults.
He said that further legal and departmental actions will be taken based on enquiry reports.

The Assam Police Headquarters condemned all willful and unlawful use of force against civilians, he stated.
The DGP stressed the importance of police officers exercising restraint, even under provocation.
Earlier on Wednesday an MBA student, Pradum Chhetri was allegedly assaulted by a Sub-Inspector identified as Pranjal Phukan and three other Lekhapani police station officers.

Reports claimed Phukan, not in uniform, forcibly removed Chhetri from a car and attacked him.
In another incident, three officials of the Basistha police station in Guwahati identified as sub-inspectors - Parag Jyoti Barman, Tirtha Deka, and Dhyanjyoti Tamuli - along with constable Kalpajyoti Neog assaulted a "mentally challenged" youth.
Reports suggest the intoxicated officers fractured Nath's leg.
