Guwahati: The 60 Assam Girls Battalion of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) on Thursday (August 29, 2024) hosted a spirited ‘Run For Fun’ event to mark the ‘National Sports Day’ in Assam’s Guwahati.

The event saw an impressive turnout of around 400 cadets, including both senior division boys and senior wing girls, from around 50 colleges and universities of the city.

They participated in a four-kilometre run followed by motivational talk by eminent sports personalities, demonstrating their commitment to fitness and community spirit.

The run was flagged off by Commanding Officer of the 60 Assam Girls Battalion Col Ajay Kumar Sharma. His presence underscored the importance of sports in fostering discipline, health and teamwork among the youth.

Medals were given to the first three winning cadets in boys and girls category separately.

“This event is not just about running, it’s about coming together as a community to celebrate our shared passion for sports and fitness. We are thrilled with the turnout and the enthusiasm displayed by the cadets,” said Col Sharma.

A highlight of the event was a motivational talk by Nayanmoni Saikia, an Arjuna Awardee and distinguished Indian international lawn bowler.

Saikia captivated the audience with her inspiring journey and shared valuable insights on perseverance, dedication and the role of sports in personal development.

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29 to commemorate the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the most iconic figures in Indian sports history.

He was a legendary field hockey player whose exceptional skills and achievements earned him the nickname ‘The Wizard’ of hockey.

His contribution to the sport and his role in India’s success in hockey are central to the significance of this day.

Major Dhyan Chand’s career spanned from the 1920s to the 1940s during which he played a pivotal role in leading India to three Olympic gold medals in hockey - 1928, 1932 and 1936.

The National Sports Day was officially established in 2012 to honour Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy, and to promote sports and physical education across the country.

The ‘Run For Fun’ event aimed at encouraging active lifestyles and fostering a sense of camaraderie among the participants.

The success of the event reaffirms the commitment of the NCC in promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle among the youth.
