SHILLONG: Following the resignation of three-time legislator Saleng A Sangma, who vacated his seat in Gambegre after being elected as the MP for Tura earlier this year, the Meghalaya election department has announced that a bye-election for the now-vacant constituency must take place before December 4.

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer, Dr BDR Tiwari, confirmed that preparations for the upcoming by-election are well underway and in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Dr Tiwari also revealed that the Election Commission of India conducted a video conference on Tuesday, bringing together representatives from various state election departments to ensure a coordinated approach to the electoral process.

In addition to the bye-election, Dr. Tiwari highlighted the ongoing special summary revision of the electoral roll for 2025, as directed by the Election Commission, further emphasizing the department's commitment to maintaining a robust and up-to-date electoral system in the state.
