Guwahati: The Assam Police have arrested four persons in connection with a theft at Mahamaya Temple in Assam’s Kokrajhar district and recovered several stolen items, including those from the temple.

Based on technical evidence, the police investigating the case of theft committed at the temple arrested four persons early Thursday morning.

On being interrogated, the gang of four led the police to the receiver of the items allegedly stolen by them, Assam Director General of Police (DGP), Gyanendra Pratap Singh, said in a post on microblogging site X, formerly Twitter.

The police recovered three silver “mukuts” (crowns) worn by Mahamaya and other deities, two pieces of gold weighing around 15 grams, 900 grams of ornaments and silver jewellery suspected to be stolen from temples and different households, a copper bowl, Rs 45,000 cash, five mobile phone handsets, gas and iron cutters suspected to be used in thefts, and a Swift Dzire car used for committing thefts in different temples across Assam and West Bengal borders, DGP Singh said in the post.

The alleged thieves have been identified as Mandal Ali, Sarif Uddin, Hazrat Ali and Asraful Ali, all residents of Bilasipara in Assam’s Dhubri district, and the receiver Moqbul Hasan, the top cop added.
