“The India-Myanmar border will be fenced, marking a monumental step towards enhancing security in our region,” said Manipur CM Biren Singh.

The Manipur chief minister further appreciated the central government’s decision to scrap the free movement regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar.

“Scrapping of the FMR demonstrates our commitment to creating a safer and more secure environment for all,” said Manipur CM Biren Singh.

The Centre had said that it decided to scrap the India-Myanmar FMR to “maintain the country’s internal security and demographic structure of the Northeast states”.

It may be mentioned here that there has been wide-spread condemnation and protest in the Northeast against the Centre’s decision to fence the India-Myanmar border and scrapping of the FMR.

The opposition to these decisions of the central government came from various organisations, including political parties and tribal bodies.

In fact, the state governments in Nagaland and Mizoram have also raised objection to the Centre’s decision to fence the India-Myanmar border and scrap the free movement regime (FMR) between the two countries.

On the other hand, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said that implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) system in the state has ensured “protection of our indigenous population”.
