Fact-Check: Old Video of Sanjay Singh scolding police falsely circulated as recent event
Guwahati: A viral video circulating on social media purportedly showing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh reprimanding police officers for mistreating an individual is causing a stir.
The video gained traction following Singh's release on bail from jail on April 2nd. This development came after the Supreme Court granted bail to Singh in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Delhi Liquor Policy.
However, the reality behind the video is quite different. Upon investigation by news website The Quint, it was discovered that the video actually dates back to 2021 and is being circulated with misleading context. Through a reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video, a similar incident from 2021 was uncovered.

The original video was shared by AAP's Uttar Pradesh's official account on X (formerly Twitter) on October 21, 2021. It depicted Singh engaging in a heated argument with the police after being denied permission for a Tiranga Yatra in Varanasi. During the altercation, the police officer referred to the yatra as "illegal."
Comparing the two videos revealed striking similarities. Additionally, AAP's post on X from October 21, 2021, shed further light on the incident, stating that the party was prohibited from hoisting flags and Singh was subsequently arrested.
Several news outlets had previously covered the tricolour rally, highlighting that AAP leaders had been booked by the Uttar Pradesh police for flouting COVID-19 regulations.
