Imphal: As a part of the Van Mahotsav, 2024, known as the “Festival of Forests,” the Manipur Government has significantly planted 1,00,000 seedlings as of July 19, 2024, against the target to plant four lakh commercially viable saplings by September 2024 to enhance the green cover across the state.

Officials said that each year 420 sq. km annually are deforested in Manipur and if this goes on for 10 to 15 years there will be an imbalance of nature.

In a vibrant celebration of Van Mahotsav, the Central Forest Division has hosted a highly successful seedling distribution event at the Central Forest Division Complex in Mantripukhri in Imphal West district.

A dedicated kiosk was set up for this purpose, and for three days, on July 15, 16, and 19, 2024, approximately 10,000 seedlings were distributed to enthusiastic students and members of the public under the leadership of District Forest Officer Ganesh N.

Van Mahotsav was celebrated this year with the theme “Ek Paudha Maa Kee Naam” (A Plant in the Name of Mother).

The event witnessed an overwhelming public demand, reflecting the community’s growing commitment to environmental conservation and green initiatives. In this context, the Division has so far distributed and planted more than 1,00,000 seedlings under Van Mahotsav, and apart from that 1.5 lakh seedlings have been grown under various schemes.

The seedlings distributed included a variety of species such as Manahei, Indian Olive, Tamarind, Amla, and Jamun, known for their ecological and nutritional benefits.

This diverse selection aimed to promote biodiversity and encourage the planting of native species.

Students and the public participated enthusiastically, demonstrating a collective effort towards enhancing the green cover and contributing to a sustainable environment. The event highlighted the importance of tree planting and the role of every individual in preserving our natural resources.

The Central Forest Division extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants and supporters who contributed to the success of this year’s Van Mahotsav celebration.

Together, we take a significant step forward in our mission to protect and nurture our forests for future generations.
