The students had requested the renaming of the Tezpur University Students’ Council (TUSC) to Tezpur University Students’ Union. While TUSC currently functions under the statutory provisions of the Tezpur University Act, 1993, the administration said it will initiate the necessary process to amend the Act.

This will involve approvals from the Academic Council and the Board of Management, as well as the establishment of a formal framework for the Union.

In a cultural initiative, the University announced plans to honor the late Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg. A statue of Garg will be installed on campus, and the University is considering awarding him a posthumous Honorary Doctorate for his contribution to Assamese music and culture.

Additionally, a scholarship in his name will be created under the Department of Cultural Studies to nurture young talent in arts and music.

Vice Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh said the University remains committed to safeguarding student interests and promoting Assam’s cultural heritage. “Neither the University nor I support activities detrimental to the state or the students. Our aim is to advance education while honoring cultural icons,” he said.

The announcements were made after Singh paid floral tributes to Zubeen Garg in front of the Administrative Building, in the presence of students, faculty, and university officials.
The event combined administrative assurances with a moment of cultural remembrance, highlighting the University’s efforts to strengthen both student representation and the state’s artistic legacy.
