Guwahati: Veteran playback singer Suman Kalyanpur, one of the most celebrated voices in Indian music, passed away on Sunday at the age of 89.

The Padma Bhushan awardee was known for her melodious and versatile singing career that spanned several decades, leaving an indelible mark on Hindi, Marathi and numerous other regional language music traditions.

Expressing grief over her demise, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar described the loss as “extremely heartbreaking” and paid tribute to her immense contribution to Indian music.

In a post on X, Pawar said Kalyanpur enriched the world of Indian music with her “sweet, melodious and soul-stirring voice”.

“Her immortal songs in Hindi, Marathi and numerous other regional languages have reigned supreme over the emotional realms of generations. With her demise, an era of gold in the realm of Indian classical and light music has drawn the curtain,” he said.

Pawar also offered his heartfelt tribute to the late singer and conveyed condolences to her bereaved family.

Kalyanpur's death marks the end of an illustrious musical journey that inspired generations of listeners and helped shape India's rich playback singing tradition.
