Assamese film Moi Eti Nixhasor wins Award of Excellence at US film festival
Guwahati: The Assamese feature film Moi Eti Nixhasor, portraying the life of a village thief against Assam’s social and political backdrop, has been honoured with the Award of Excellence Special Mention at the US-based Accolade Global Film Competition.
Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky, the film is adapted from a true story by senior journalist Anuradha Sharma Pujari. Kotoky said this recognition is notable, as the festival is ranked among the top 25 by Movie Maker magazine for its quality and prestige.
The award places Moi Eti Nixhasor among the top 10 entries of the competition, highlighting excellence in both storytelling and technical execution. Kotoky reflected that the film demonstrates how human emotions resonate universally, transcending geographical boundaries.
He added that while the story is set in a remote Assamese village in the recent past, it mirrors social and political challenges faced worldwide today.
The film chronicles the life of Koduwa, a clever village thief whose efforts to improve his life are constantly obstructed by local authorities and societal pressures. Kotoky said the award is a tribute to the entire creative team. “By the end of the film, viewers are prompted to question — who is truly the real thief?” he added.
The lead role is played by noted theatre actor Gunomoni Baruah, with senior and junior artistes from the Assamese film industry filling supporting roles. The film has also been selected for the Covellite International Film Festival 2026 in the USA, where it was praised for its charm and audience engagement.
Produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in collaboration with Red River & Blue Hills, Kotoky said the film will see a commercial release in Assam in the coming months, and he hopes local audiences will respond with equal appreciation.
