NCERT forms team to develop AI textbooks for classes 11-12
Guwahati: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has formed a dedicated team to develop syllabi and textbooks on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 11 and 12, the Ministry of Education informed Parliament.
The initiative is part of the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework 2023, aiming to equip senior secondary students with essential AI and computational thinking skills for the digital economy, the ministry stated.
In addition, NCERT has introduced an AI-based project on Animation and Games in the vocational education textbook for Class 6.
The project uses AI tools to give students early exposure to practical applications of artificial intelligence through hands-on learning.
The Ministry stated that AI education will be rolled out across all schools from Class 3 onwards starting with the 2026–27 academic session, reinforcing its commitment to integrating AI and computational thinking as essential components of future-ready education.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also prepared a comprehensive AI and computational thinking curriculum for Classes 3 to 12.
Foundational AI concepts will be introduced in early grades, while advanced computational thinking and AI will become mandatory subjects for Classes 9 and 10.
To further strengthen AI education nationwide, the Government of India has launched the SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness) initiative.
Aligned with NEP 2020, the National Programme on AI (NPAI) Skilling Framework, and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, SOAR aims to build AI awareness and foundational skills among students from Classes 6 to 12 and enhance AI literacy among teachers.
The initiatives aim to prepare students and educators for a technology-driven future and support digital education nationwide.
