Manipur University celebrates World Poetry Day 2024

Imphal: The power of poetry is recognized as a universal art form that transcends cultures and languages, says Diganta Biswa Sarma, Professor of Practice at Dibrugarh University (Assam).

He was speaking as a Guest of Honour at the World Poetry Day 2024 celebration held at the Senate Hall of the Manipur University on Thursday.

He also refreshed the idea of poetry for the gathering by re-communicating the function of poetry and art in three points including poetry and art embellish life with beauty which makes life more important.

March 21 as Poetry Day was first adopted by UNESCO in 1999.

The day also honours the poets who continue the tradition in newer generations. It is celebrated on March 21 annually to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and generate or increase the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.

Prof. Irom Gambhir Singh, Head of the Department of English and Cultural Studies at Manipur University said the celebration aims to foster creativity, inspire dialogue, and celebrate the rich tapestry of languages and cultures that make up our global community. The event also seeks to display the beauty of poetry as an art form.

The Department of English and Cultural Studies, Manipur University, organized the celebration with the theme “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.”

The event was graced by Prof. L. Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, as the Chief Guest, Diganta Biswa Sarma, Professor of Practice at Dibrugarh University, and Prof. Soibam Imoba Singh, from the Department of Linguistics and Dean of Humanities at Manipur University, as the Guests of Honour, along with the President of the event, Prof. Irom Gambhir Singh, Head of the Department of English and Cultural Studies at Manipur University.
