Deportation of Myanmar nationals will continue: Manipur CM

IMPHAL: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has underscored the challenges and legal procedures involved in the process, emphasizing a systematic approach to ensure compliance with regulations while addressing the pressing issue.

Speaking on the matter, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh stated, “The number is huge so we cannot deport them altogether at one time. So part by part we are deporting them.”

The Manipur CM added: “There are some legal procedures that we have to follow, we are following them and are deporting them and will continue to deport.”

The statement highlights the complexity of the situation, with a significant number of Myanmar nationals seeking refuge or residing in Manipur due to various circumstances in their home country.

Earlier, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh announced that the initial group of Myanmar nationals who entered India unlawfully had been repatriated on Friday.

The first group consisted of seven individuals, with the remaining 71 scheduled for phased deportation within three to four days.

A total of 78 foreigners, including 51 women, 5 minors, and 22 men detained at the Imphal foreigner detention centre, are set to be deported.

On the first day, seven Myanmar nationals were transported by helicopter from Imphal International Airport to Moreh, a Manipur-Myanmar border town, where they were handed over to Myanmar authorities at the Indo-Myanmar border gate.
