Cyclone Remal | Mizoram stone quarry collapse: Rs 15 crore ex-gratia for victims announced
AIZAWL: Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 15 crore for the victims of the devastating landslides caused by Cyclone Remal.
The Mizoram chief minister specified that Rs 4 lakh would be provided to the kin of each person who lost their life in the disaster.
In a statement, Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma emphasized the need to support all those affected by Cyclone Remal across the state.
“The wind and rain have caused extensive damage in various areas. Many people have lost their lives, their homes, and are facing numerous hardships. District Disaster Management Authorities are requested to take immediate action,” he said.
Lalduhoma urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent further damage.
It may be mentioned here that at least 14 people died and several others were reported to be missing as a stone quarry collapsed in Aizawl district of Mizoram on Tuesday (May 28) morning amid incessant rains as an impact of Cyclone Remal, police said.
The incident happened around 6 am in an area between Melthum and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Aizawl town in Mizoram.
“All efforts are underway to rescue the people who are trapped under the debris. However, heavy rains are affecting the operations,” Mizoram DGP Anil Shukla said.
Aizawl has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar.
Moreover, several intra-state highways have also been disrupted by landslides.
Mizoram CM Lalduhoma convened an emergency meeting with state’s home minister K Sapdanga, chief secretary Renu Sharma and other senior officials to take stock of the situation.
