GUWAHATI: Former Meghalaya governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary lauded Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma as the epitome of civility among chief ministers in the country.

Speaking at a function organized by the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) to pay tribute to the late PA Sangma, former Lok Sabha speaker from Meghalaya, Mooshahary hailed PA Sangma as the iconic face of the Northeast, a legendary statesman, and a principled individual dedicated to his duties.

Mooshahary emphasized that one of PA Sangma's significant legacies is reflected in the character of his children, who, like their father, are known for their civility and integrity without any allegations of corruption.

He singled out Conrad Sangma, the current chief minister of Meghalaya, as the paragon of civility among all chief ministers in India.

Reflecting on PA Sangma's contributions, Mooshahary noted that the late leader narrowly missed attaining the highest positions in the country, such as the President and Prime Minister, due to internal party dynamics.

He credited leaders like PA Sangma for elevating Meghalaya's prominence on the national stage.

The USTM also organized the 7th Memorial Lecture on “Role of PA Sangma for Progressive Meghalaya” in honour of the late leader.

The event was attended by USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, Vice-Chancellor Prof GD Sharma, faculty members, staff, and numerous students.

Addressing the audience, USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque expressed gratitude to PA Sangma for his pivotal role in the enactment of the USTM Act in the Meghalaya Assembly in 2008.

Hoque hailed PA Sangma as a visionary leader who advocated for nurturing young minds through education.

He underscored PA Sangma's mentorship and support in establishing a higher educational institution in Meghalaya, highlighting the late leader's enduring legacy in the foundation of USTM.

Hoque also acknowledged the contributions of Dr Donkupar Roy, the then chief minister of Meghalaya, and Manas Choudhuri, the then education minister, for their positive roles in facilitating the establishment of USTM, alongside PA Sangma and RS Mooshahary.
