GUWAHATI: The Congress is likely to contest in 12 constituencies in Assam in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Formerly a dominant force in Assam, the Congress is endeavoring to reestablish its influence amid shifting political dynamics.

The decision to go solo follows internal discussions within the party's leadership on the most effective approach to challenge the ruling party.

Expectations are high for the imminent announcement of candidates representing the party in these constituencies.

Earlier, the Assam unit of the Congress party finalised candidates in as many as five constituencies in the state for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

This was confirmed by Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah.

It may be mentioned here that there are a total of 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Northeast state of Assam.

While the Congress has finalised candidates in five of the 14 seats, it is expected to leave few of the remaining nine seats for the parties in the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA).

The Assam Congress president further said that a final decision in regards to candidates in the remaining nine constituencies in the state would be taken by February 20.

Earlier, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), one of the UOFA constituents, announced candidates for three Lok Sabha constituencies — Dibrugarh, Guwahati and Sonitpur.
