Congress clinches seven LS seats in Northeast, makes a comeback

Assam:  The Congress made a comeback in the Northeast part of the country and was able to snatch seats from BJP and its allies.

The grand old party got three seats in Assam, two in Manipur and one each in Nagaland and Meghalaya.   

In 2019, Congress were able to get only four out of the 26 Lok Sabha constituency seats in the eight northeastern states. Three were from Assam and one from Meghalaya

In Assam, the Indian National Congress were able to win three seats out of the total 14 Lok Sabha constituency seats in the state. This time the tally has increased to seven.

In the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency seat, Rakibul Hussain of Congress won by a record margin of 10,12,476 votes over Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal of All India United Democratic Front.

Hussain received a total of 14,71,885 votes compared to Ajmal’s 4,59,409 votes.

In the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency seat Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi defeated Topon Kumar Gogoi of BJP by a margin of 1,44,393 votes.

Gaurav received a total of 7,51,771 votes compared to Topon’s 6,07,378 votes.

In the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency seat Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi defeated Suresh Borah of BJP by a margin of 2,12,231 votes.

Bordoloi got a total of 788850 votes compared to Borah’s 5,76,619 votes.

In Manipur, the Congress party got both the seats and the sentiments in the ethnic violence-torn state was evidently against BJP and its allies.

In the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha Constituency seat, Congress candidate Angomcha Bimol Akoijam defeated Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh of BJP by a margin of 1,09,801 votes.

In the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha Constituency seat, Congress candidate Alfred Kanngam S Arthur defeated Kachui Timothy Zimik of Naga Peoples Front by a margin of 85,418 votes.

In Meghalaya, in the Tura Lok Sabha Constituency seat, Saleng A Sangma of Congress defeated Agatha K Sangma of NPP by 1,55,241 votes.

Agatha is the sister of present Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

In Nagaland, Congress candidate and Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee president S Supongmeren Jamir emerged winner in Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat defeating the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance candidate from the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) Dr Chumben Murry by a margin of 50,984 votes.
