New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has formally recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.

This recommendation, sent to the Union government, is in line with the convention where the retiring Chief Justice nominates the next in line.

Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983.

He practised at the district courts and later in the High Court of Delhi and tribunals.

His elevation to the Supreme Court came on January 18, 2019, after serving as an additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and permanent judge in 2006.

Upon approval, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India, serving a tenure of six months until May 13, 2025, before his retirement.

It may be mentioned that Judges of the Supreme Court retire at the age of 65.

Outgoing Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who took office on November 9, 2022, has been part of landmark judgments, including the electoral bond scheme verdict, Ram Janmabhoomi verdict, Sabarimala case, same-sex marriage case, and revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

The Union government's approval is now awaited to confirm Justice Khanna's appointment as the next Chief Justice of India.
