DIBRUGARH: The central government is committed to finding a permanent solution to the issue of floods in the Northeast state of Assam.

This was stated by union minister Sarbananda Sonowal after conducted an assessment of the flood situation in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam.

“The state and the Centre are committed to finding a permanent solution to the flood situation in Assam,” Sarbananda Sonowal stated.

“Lakhs of people have been affected by Assam floods. The state government and district administration are actively providing relief materials,” he said.

Sonowal added: “In the coming days, both the state government and the Centre are dedicated to resolving the flood issues in Assam.”

He also said that there is a need for a detailed study on Dibrugarh city.

“A competent institution will conduct a techno-economic feasibility and landscape assessment, and based on the report, a permanent solution will be sought,” the former Assam chief minister said.

The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the total death toll reaching 52 and approximately 21.13 lakh people affected across 29 districts due to the second wave of floods.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), six people have died in the last 24 hours, and more than 3.86 lakh people are currently taking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centres set up by the administration in 24 flood-hit districts.

The ASDMA report also indicated that 11,20,165 animals have been affected by the floods.

The number of impacted villages has increased to 3208, and the devastating floodwaters have resulted in the death of 31 wild animals in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.

The flood-affected districts of Assam include Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, South Salmara, Dhubri, Jorhat, Charaideo, Hojai, Karimganj, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Darrang, Biswanath, Cachar, Kamrup-M, Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Chirang, Karbi Anglong West and Majuli.
