CAA not a concern for Meghalaya, says state BJP chief

SHILLONG: The citizenship amendment act (CAA) is no longer a concern for the Northeast state of Meghalaya.

This was claimed by Meghalaya president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rikman G Momin.

Meghalaya BJP chief Rikman G Momin said that the CAA will not be applicable to the state as it is protected by the sixth schedule of the Constitution of India.

Briefing the media, the Meghalaya BJP president expressed gratitude towards the central government for acknowledging the sentiments of the tribal communities and exempting the sixth schedule areas from the purview of citizenship amendment act (CAA).

Momin emphasized the BJP's commitment to the welfare of tribal communities and its inclusive approach in policymaking.

The Meghalaya BJP president noted that despite the act being passed in 2019, the government took four years to deliberate before implementing the rules.

Momin underscored that such measures by the central government reaffirm its dedication to uplifting the tribal communities through various governmental schemes.

With Meghalaya now exempted from the CAA, Momin urged those opposing it to focus on the nation's progress and prosperity.

Highlighting recent developments, Momin informed that Rs 15,000 crore has been allocated for upgrading the Umroi to Silchar road from two lanes to four lanes.

He emphasized the pro-people and pro-development agenda of the Modi government, urging the people of Meghalaya to support the BJP candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Momin envisioned that by electing two BJP MPs, Meghalaya could garner more benefits for the state.
